Dacia Vikings defeat Prague Black Panthers

The Dacia Vienna Vikings kicked off the new AFL season with a solid 28:7 victory over the Prague Black Panthers yesterday at the Stadium Hohe Warte in Vienna. 2.065 people were attending the highly anticipated match-up between these two European Football powerhouses in the Austrian Football League.

It was Austin Herink’s debut in the AFL and as a Vikings Quarterback. The former East Tennessee State playmaker threw for 227 yards and completed 15 of 23 passes, three of those were touchdown passes to WR Bernhard Seikovits (2 TDs) and WR Philipp Dubravec finishing the game with QB NFL Rating of 137.1. After only having been two weeks with the team, the offense of the men in purple led by Herink got the job done and looked promising for the upcoming course of the season.

„The game was a lot of fun “, said Austin after the final huddle Sunday night, „It was a great experience to see the differences in the game day atmosphere between the states and here in Europe. I’m happy that we were able to get our first win of the season, but I’m excited to get back to work on the things we need to improve upon. “

Vikings Head Coach Chris Calaycay shared Herink’s joy about starting off the 2019 season with a win but quickly added: „We know what to work on. There are areas we definitely need to improve. And we don’t have a lot of time for urgent adjustments since our next game is on Saturday against the Swarco Raiders in Tyrol. “

First Half Game Report

After winning the coin toss, the Panthers choose to receive the first kickoff. The intensity of both teams is fully on display from the moment the game begins. The players clash for the first time, and the Panthers will start on their own 35-yard line. As both teams line up, the crowd is thunderous. As the stands shake, there is a sudden jump and the penalty flag has been thrown. False start, Black Panthers. After a muddled first play, it is immediately clear that crowd noise will be a crucial factor in this game. Unable to get anything started on their first drive, the Panthers will punt the ball away. At just under the ten-minute mark, the Vikings offense takes the field.

The Vikings begin their march downfield. Despite two sacks, the Vikings make consistent forward progress. The patient Vikings continue to push the Panthers deeper into their own territory. Suddenly, the pattern of short and medium gains is broken, as #8 Austin David Herink expertly fires the ball downfield, where it's caught by #4 Bernhard Seikovits and brought in for a 31-yard touchdown. The Vikings are the first on the board and the crowd jumps to their feet, and dances in celebration. After a successful extra point by #2 Christopher Kappel, the Vikings are up 7-0 with 5:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Despite high energy and aggressive play, the next two drives were rather short. Both the Vikings and Panthers defenses held each other's offenses to short gains, both forcing the other to punt it away. The Panthers start their third offensive drive near the end of the first quarter. Despite some forward progress, the Panthers are pushed back by a holding call and are unable to make up the distance before being forced to punt it away.

With 9:18 left in the half, the Vikings offense returns to the field. The Vikings again show a patient and meticulous offensive strategy, as they make consistent gains and cross the 50-yard line. In a seemingly crucial defensive play, the Panthers executed a surprising sack which is immediately retracted due to a Face Mask penalty on the same defensive player. The Vikings make the most of this 15-yard gain, and after two plays #8 Austin David Herink launches a pass to #17 Philipp Dubravec who took it in for a 30-yard touchdown. After another successful kick by #2 Christopher Kappel, the Vikings are up 14-0 with 7:22 remaining in the half.

The Panthers offense, eager to close the gap, returns to the field with energy and determination. Despite some strong plays, the progress of the pathers Panthers is hampered by two penalties and a sack, before they are forced to punt away a promising drive.

The Vikings start with great field position on their own 49-yard line. After a wonderful catch by Yannick Mayr, the Vikings gained 31 crucial yards. A few plays later, #5 Marko Gagic executes a quick 6-yard run, giving the Vikings their third touchdown of the night. After another kick from #2, the Vikings are up 21-0 with only 1:32 left in the half.

The Panthers, ready to answer back, rush to the field. Despite starting on their own 21-yard line, the Panthers execute some strong plays and manage the clock well. They get into field goal range but miss the 44-yard attempt. Despite this valiant effort, the clock winds down and the Panthers go into the half trailing the Vikings by 21.

Second Half Game Report

The third quarter was scoreless but was thrilling nonetheless. The Panthers start with an onside kick, which they manage to recover. After a few plays, the Panthers fumble and the Vikings quickly recover it. The Vikings recover the momentum. They push down to the Panthers' 31-yard line, before missing a close 4th down conversion. After the turnover, the Vikings defense plays a great drive. After a sack and minimal gains, the Panthers punt it away.

The Vikings take over at their own 43-yard line and push to increase their lead. After a few plays and an unfortunate sack, the Vikings punt it away. In the first play of the next drive, Prague appears to catch a break. From the stands, it looked as though #10 Dylan Potts rushed for a touchdown, but the play was reversed due to a holding call. After a few penalties and a Vikings personal foul ejection, the ball returns to the Vikings.

In their next drive, the Vikings make some small gains, but after three plays are forced to punt it away. With 1:24 left in the third quarter, the Panthers take over. They start on their own 35 and begin to push down the field. The timer runs down, and the final quarter of the game begins. After a series of first downs and consistent forward progress, #6 Matthew Vinal rushes into the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Panthers their first score of the night. #3 Kamil Roba successfully kicks the extra point, and Prague is on the board. 21-7 Vikings leading.

The Vikings, not ready to rest on their laurels, come on the field ready to fire back. The Vikings drive down the field and push to the Panthers' 39-yard line. In a moment reminiscent of the beginning of the game, #8 Austin David Herink connects with #4 Bernhard Seikovits for a 39-yard touchdown. #2 Christopher Kappel kicks another successful extra point, and the Vikings extend their lead over the Panthers to 28-7 with 5:29 to go in the game.

In their final drive, the Panthers started on their own 20-yard line, and after one conversion, failed to convert on 4th down on their own 39. In their final drive, the Vikings execute a few plays as the clock runs out. The stands erupt, and the Vikings celebrate a well-earned win.

Short Vikings Postgame Analysis

The Vikings exhibited strong execution on both sides of the ball. A trademark of the Vikings offense seems to be making consistent measured gains, then following up with a high-risk high reward play. This is an evident pattern that showed in each of their scoring drives. With three touchdowns resulting from a 30-39-yard pass, and the other having been set up by a 31-yard pass, the Vikings clearly have their offensive play down to a formula. Their defense, equally aggressive and successful, proved effective at containing the Panthers offense which, despite being beset by penalties, was highly motivated. By not giving that offense a window, the Vikings defense effectively held off the Panthers while the Vikings offense ran up the score. This balance between the two squads creates a force to be reckoned with, which will undoubtedly serve them well during the upcoming season.
