ECTC Divisional Game 2
Vikings at Dracs
Dacia Vienna Vikings prepared for the dragon hunt in Spain
The upcoming weekend marks the second ECTC (European Club Team Competition) game for the Dacia Vikings. The Viennese team travels to Badalona to matchup with the reigning Spanish champion: The Badalona Dracs. After having won the first divisional round-up versus the Triangle Razorbacks, the Vikings can theoretically already claim a playoff spot if they beat the Dracs in the this highly anticipated Central Division game. Kickoff between the Dracs and the Vikings is at 5 pm CET at the Camp Municipal de Pomar stadium. DracsTV will cover the game live (with English and Spanish commentary) on its YouTube channel(www.youtube.com/user/Dracstv).
Dracs are hottest Spanish title contender in 2019 again
The Spanish LNFA Series A is already in the final stage of the 2019 season and the Badalona Dracs haven’t lost a single game so far. After nine wins (the latest one was a 49:0 victory over the Hurricanes in the Quarter Finals), the Dracs are already qualified for the semifinal game that is set the second weekend in May. The Spanish Bowl will be held on May 25th – and it won’t be a surprise if the Dragons from Badalona will be in the Championship Showdown this year again. Fired up by the final season of Game Of Thronesthe Dracs have been spitting (virtual) fire at the Vienna Vikings for a while now promoting this ECTC game on Saturday night in Badalona.

Dracs Head Coach Oscar Calatayud is all excited about the match-up against the Vikings: „We hope it will be a competitive battle and a game to remember! We see this matchup as a great opportunity to face one of the Top 5 teams in Europe. In 2010, we already had the chance to play the Vikings in their home stadium in Vienna, and it was a wonderful experience for our team. But we improved a lot over the past nine years. Now it is time for us to see where we stand compared to other European top teams. We know that the Vikings will come here with a team of very talented and physical players. We can’t afford to make mistakes, especially not at the beginning of the game. We saw what happened to the Razorbacks in the first quarter against the Vikings: they had flaws in their game and the damage was done.”
The Dacia Vikings are coming off an ugly loss against the Graz Giants on Easer Monday which forced the team to face their weaknesses, to adjust and to re-focus within a very short week of preparation. “Monday night we watched tape, on Tuesday all our thoughts were already directed on the Badalona Dracs. We won’t change anything about our philosophy, but we have to pay big attention to the little things and details: Minimizing errors and avoiding turnovers and penalties are key. We can’t play like we did in Graz and expect a win. Practices and meetings are on our daily schedule now. Friday night we will have our final evening meeting in the team hotel in Badalona”, Dacia Vikings Head CoachChris Calaycay finds clear words after the loss to the Giants and prior to the game against the Dracs, knowing that a W in Spain is a sure ticket to the ECTC Playoff on June 8/9.
US import player Dustin Rivas out vs. Dracs
One guy who won’t be able to help the Vikings winning the game is US import player Dustin Rivas. The 24-year-old Defensive Back from Colorado is injured again. After he had to sit out the first three games of the season, the DB gave his Vikings debut during the game versus the Razorbacks. But the injury kicked in again at the end of the first half which kept him off the field for the remaining half of the game. “The injury is more serious than we thought in the beginning. A couple of medical checks and tests are scheduled during this week. We will see how his test results look like, then we will take further steps”, says Dacia Vikings president Karl Wurm. The loss of the American Defensive Back comes at the worst possible moment for the Vikings. The team would need a depth in its roster right now when there are no bye weeks and AFL as well as ECTC games are played every weekend.
Dacia Vikings WR #4 Bernhard Seikovits is currently the number 2 in the AFL Receiving stats: In 4 games he had 24 catches, 366 yards and 5 touchdowns.
The Dacia Vikings will fly to Barcelona on Friday. It will be their first international away game since April 2016. Back then, the Vikings beat the Argonautes d’Aix en Provence in France 42:0.
