Last weekend the Dacia Vikings faced the Badalona Dracs in their international play, this upcoming Sunday May 5 (Kickoff 3 pm CET) the Danube Dragons will come to the Vikings home stadium Hohe Warte to compete in Round 5 of the AFL. It seems that plenty of fire spitting animals are crossing the Vikings’ path lately.

Vikings are coming off a solid win vs. Badalona Dracs

The Dacia Vienna Vikings dominated from the opening whistle in defeating Spain’s Badalona Dracs 38-8 in European Club Team Competition (ECTC) action in Barcelona, Spain, last Saturday April 27. With the victory, the Vikings have won the ECTC Central Division(after also beating the Triangle Razorbacks from Denmark on April 14) and will await the winner of the game between Denmark’s Copenhagen Towers and Finnish Champions, the Helsinki Roosters, in the ECTC Northern Division. The ECTC Playoff game is set for the weekend of June 8/9.

The Vikings built a 38-0 lead entering the fourth quarter before the Dracs finally got on the scoreboard late in the game. Dacia Vikings quarterback #8 Austin Herink completed 20 of 28 passes for 380 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 20 yards and a touchdown. Running back #20 Islaam Amadu had 14 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns while receiver #6 Maurice Wappl had three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, #17 Philipp Dubravec caught two passes for 85 yards and a major.  Vikings Star wideout #4 Bernhard Seikovits led all receivers with seven receptions for 108 yards. #6 Wappl also kicked five PATS and a Field Goal.

AFL Week 5

The Danube Dragons are visiting the Vikings for the battle over Vienna

There is always a special rivalry in the air when these two Viennese teams meet. Even though the Vikings won every matchup within the past years, this season the Dragons started very well beating the Graz Giants, the Rangers Mödling as well as the Steelsharks Traun before they had to accept their first loss in the season against the Raiders Tyrol. Now, the Dragons are ranked number two in the AFL standings while the Vikings – having a 2-2 record – are on the fifth AFL rank.

But, there is a new dragon hunter in town: the Vikings announce the signing of defensive back Andrew Spencer.

Dacia Vienna Vikings sign Winona State Star-DB Andrew Spencer

The 24 years old Illinois native (6’1 ft, 208 lbs) arrived Monday in Vienna and already joined his first practice with the team on Tuesday evening. After graduating from Winona State University, he followed an initiation to the Cleveland Browns Rookie Minicamp and signed earlier this year with the Salt Lake Stallions in the AAF.

“It is strange how things sometimes work out. Andrew was one of the first guys on our board at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, he signed a contract with the AAF, but we kept in touch over the last months. And after the AAF came to an end, he got in contact with me again and wanted to come to Europe to join the Vikings. At the same time our import Dustin Rivas got unfortunately hurt in a way that he couldn’t finish the season. So, when we decided to move forward it was an easy transition to go with one of the guys we had on our board at first. And we really liked what Andrew puts on the field, as far as a playmakerand the energy he brings to the field,” Vikings Head Coach Chris Calaycay is happy to announce the latest addition to his team. “One of the things I like about Andrew is that he is a real easy guy to work with. We asked for some paper work and he sent it over within an hour. He is on top of things, he is in great shape and the basic thing for him is he just wants to play again. He has been in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns for a training camp, he played for the AAF and now he is joining us. With him coming from a smaller College, those are the guys that I like. He is used to work hard and to grind in order to achieve what he wants.”

Andrew will wear number 24 with the Vikings and is eager to get to work with his new team: “I signed with the Vikings because they play very good football and they compete. My expectations are to get here and get right to work to help the Vikings accomplish their goals which is to win every competition they are in. I am here to compete, to win, and to help my team play at the highest level”.

The new Vikings DB will give his AFL debut on Sunday May 5 versus the Danube Dragons. Kickoff at the Hohe Warte stadium is at 3 pm CET. The Dacia Venna Vikings will livestream the game in cooperation with Streamster (https://youtu.be/rglGFg9EaWA).
